No connection at this number
No connection under this number: If the elevator suddenly gets stuck, quick help is needed. The legislature has passed a regulation that will come into force on January 1, 2021. In the future, it must be ensured that someone can actually be reached around the clock in an emergency. Without reliable two-way communication, there is a risk of lift operations being shut down. But how can elevators be easily retrofitted? Smart antennas with GSM technology offer a fast, cost-effective and reliable solution.
Elevators are considered particularly safe. But even regular maintenance and the best technology cannot 100% prevent the elevator from getting stuck. This is when the hour of the emergency call service strikes. A test conducted by the Ministry of Labor in 2013 showed that this service is often unavailable, with the emergency call going unheard in 50% of cases.
Lift retrofitting becomes mandatory
This is set to change when the amended Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health comes into force. Legislation will make the retrofitting of elevators mandatory. If the elevator gets stuck, someone must be available around the clock and communication must be established between the elevator occupants and the emergency call center. The regulation will take effect at the beginning of 2021, and there are no transitional periods. But how can such an emergency service be ensured technically?
Mobile communications solution saves time and money
Operators have the choice between a fixed network connection or a mobile radio connection. Investing in a mobile communications solution is less expensive and pays for itself more quickly. The installation effort is also lower. The decisive factor is using the right antenna. It must be highly efficient to ensure a stable, high-performance connection between the elevator and the nearest cell tower.
Powerful antennas at the heart
The company Antennentechnik Bad Blankenburg from Weimar specializes in antennas for use in difficult environments. In close cooperation with municipal utilities and specialists from the energy sector, the company has developed particularly powerful antennas for so-called smart metering. The aim is to establish a secure connection via mobile communications in order to transmit consumption and feed-in data securely. The challenge: Meter cabinets are located in the basement. The antennas must therefore be powerful enough to transmit the signals securely to the nearest cell tower.
Avoiding shutdown of lift operations
The special antennas used for this purpose are also suitable for two-way communication in elevators (station antennas 4934 and 4942). They have a very high efficiency and can be installed quickly and easily. As a result, elevator operators can not only save time and money during mandatory elevator retrofits, but also avoid having to shut down elevator operations after a TÜV inspection. In an emergency, elevator users will no longer be told: No connection under this number.
